Waste minister Jane Kennedy has thrown her weight behind the Every Can Counts scheme to improve the recycling of beverage cans in the workplace.

The initiative, which was launched in October, received a major boost on Monday (23 February) when 15 organisations in the West Midlands registered with the scheme – the day before Kennedy pledged her support.

Alupro is running the Every Can Counts scheme in order make inroads to recovering the 40,000 tonnes of metal that is consumed outside of the home.

Alupro executive director Rick Hindley said: “It’s a national service but will have a regional focus and link businesses with existing collection services.”

Hindley was speaking alongside Kennedy at London digital marketing agency I-level, which is one of the first London-based operations to join the scheme.

Kennedy said recycling was a “huge issue and a fantastic success” and praised the “systematic approach” of the campaign.

“This is a really good example of government and the private sector working together,” she added.

Beverage Can Makers Europe, UK Canmakers, Wrap, Novelis and Corus Steel Packaging Recycling fund Every Can Counts.

One major supermarket has already signed up to the scheme and Hindley said they were already talking to a further four.
