The Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) is now “focusing in the right direction” according to delegates at its 2007 open meeting, where it laid out its key priorities for the coming year.

Liz Goodwin, Wrap's recently appointed chief executive, listed the four key priorities for the organisation as collections, recyclates, food waste and the management of mixed plastics.

She added that Wrap had an important role to play in "working with all parts of the resource efficiency loop to make it as easy, efficient and economically sustainable as possible for everyone to prevent waste and recycle more".

Packaging Federation chief executive Dick Searle welcomed her review.

"Packaging in the waste stream is only three per cent of landfill," he said. "Until recently, Wrap's attention on packaging has been disproportionately high, so I'm delighted to see that packaging isn't even mentioned."

David Workman, director of British Glass, said Wrap's priorities were a "sea change towards the real issues that are facing us".

He added that there was a more "realistic view of the issues to do with the quality of material being returned to us", and welcomed the priority given to tackling food waste.

Norman Lett, Europe recycling manager for Ball Packaging, called for a representative from the metal packaging industry at Wrap.

"If you have multi-material recycling schemes, you will always have metals, so who's going to represent metals in this system?" he asked. "I would say Wrap is best placed to do this."

Searle added: "The last piece in the jigsaw now is to get consumers to understand where the real problems are."
