Director of market development Marcus Gover told the Associate Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group last Wednesday (11 February) the latest data showed “markets are on a more stable footing with recovered materials holding on to price gains”.
In the three weeks to 9 February, the price of cardboard rose by 43% to £50 per tonne, while steel increased from £10 to £15 per tonne.
Glass and aluminium prices remained the same, but the price of clear PET fell by 12% to £70 per tonne according to Wrap’s figures.
However, Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) is reported to have revealed at last week’s meeting that the economic downturn could mean it would buy no steel cans this year as demand for new material halved.
Manager David Williams said metal PRN supply would fall this year, leading to a 95,000 PRN shortfall. Williams said in November it would not be buying packaging scrap for at least the first six months of 2009.
Williams was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
