Chesapeake has invested in the largest GUK folding machine in the UK to meet growing demand for pharmaceutical leaflets at its Greenford site.

GUK UK distributor M Partners in Surrey believes the machine, which is able to execute 14 folds in one multi-up sheet with tolerances of 1mm, is the largest in the UK.

The GUK FA53 features 14 folding plates, two knives and GUK’s aqua-scoring capabilities.

Joint managing director of M Partners Murray Lock said: “The new FA53 at Greenford is certainly the largest GUK folding machine in the UK and we believe it to be the largest and most capable folder installed by any company.”

The GUK FA53 is capable of handling printed sheets up to B1 format. It is the second major investment at the Greenford site this year.

In February, Chesapeake announced it had bought a KBA press for its Greenford site to meet growing demand for larger leaflet formats.

“Our pharmaceutical business is currently exhibiting significant growth,” said Chesapeake’s general manager for leaflets, UK and Ireland, Roy Brindle.

“We need the best equipment to meet our targets and the GUK folder demonstrated it is consistently accurate while operating at impressive production speeds.”

GUK’s aqua-scoring option helps avoid cracking during the folding process, and so speeds up the folding process, by softening the folds with a softener and water mixture using high pressure water jets.
