The firm said the correct coding, packaging and labelling of products was very important because time-consuming re-working of the foods prepared at the factory, or even external product withdrawals, would be costly.
The AutoCoding system has been installed on all four lines in one of the five factories at West Marsh Road, initially controlling Imaje inkjet and Markem thermal printers, outercase labellers and Sick barcode scanners.
Each line has a dedicated touch screen terminal which links up to Welland’s existing ERP system.
Welland Fresh Foods factory manager Mick Brailsford told Packaging News: “Date coding on the pots and lids for our dips was previously done manually. The biggest benefit from the AutoCoding software, which scans at 240 pots a minute, is that it has removed the need for manual intervention and has eliminated coding and packaging errors.”
It also allows Welland to communicate with equipment from a variety of suppliers, offers full audit trails and guarantees 100% barcode readability, even at high speeds.
Brailsford said the firm planned to extend the AutoCoding software next year to the packaging equipment downstream, such as robots and palletisers, to cut changeover times.
Welland Fresh Foods produces dips, salad dressings and convenience foods at the Spalding site.
