Packaging and print sector firms including Easypack, William Beckett Plastics and Greenstar WES have received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2009 for their contribution to UK business.

The companies featured among a record 194 companies to receive an award across three categories – international trade, innovation and sustainability.

Sheffield firm William Beckett Plastics won the international trade award for exporting plastic boxes to more than 40 countries. Export accounts for 80% of the business and has grown by 83% in the past five years.

Managing director and founder William Beckett described the award as “the highest accolade” for any business. “It’s the business knighthood.”

Stevenage-based firm Easypack has won the award for a second time for its 100% recyclable and biodegradable voidfill and product protection packaging.

Managing director Mark Kempster said: “Our local workforce and local supply chain partners are the backbone of our success.”

Other firms to win the award this year include UPM-Kymmene, plastics recycling firm Greenstar WES and rubber-covered roller manufacturer Just Rollers.

Business minister Peter Mandelson said the winners were “among Britain’s very best businesses”. “They set the standard for other businesses to follow as they help lead Britain out of recession.”

The Queen’s Awards for Industry were set up in 1966 and renamed in 2000. The full 2009 list is available by clicking here.
