UK Packaging Awards 2008 – A celebration of our industry

As we know all too well, packaging can get a bit of a rough ride. If it’s not excess packaging, it’s plastic bags or any one of a thousand other, often ill-informed, complaints about what we do as an industry.

So it’s all the more important that once in a while the industry comes together to celebrate everything that it’s good at. Through the UK Packaging Awards, now in its third year, that’s exactly what we are doing. The awards, which were presented at a glitzy dinner on 3 November, give public recognition not only to what our industry does well, but to the very best in the sector.

As ever, it was a hugely difficult task for our 15 judges to come up with the winners. It’s never easy to definitively and objectively decide that one product is better than another; but they’ve done it, and my thanks go to them for taking part.

It’s important, too, to know that the industry is winning the PR battle. That’s why, this year, we launched the Readers’ Choice awards, in which Packaging News readers were asked to vote online on their choice of the best clients, waste management firms and packs. You will find their selections on pages 14 and 15 – and you may be surprised at the results.

I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the success of this year’s event. First, the events, advertising and editorial teams here at Haymarket, especially Catherine Dawes for her tireless work on this supplement and David Felice, who runs the event. And thanks to our sponsors from across the industry for their continued support for our awards.

Finally, and most importantly, congratulations. First, to all the companies who entered the awards; even if you didn’t win, you have plenty to be proud of. And for those who did win, congratulations ten times over. In an industry packed with top-quality companies, your award truly sets you apart.
