Last year’s Packaging Company of the Year, DS Smith Speciality Packaging, has shifted focus somewhat for 2008 to come out the clear winner in the Supplier of the Year category.

The strength of the firm’s site in Launceston, Cornwall cannot be doubted. It is a leader in just-in-time supply to a range of customers in both conventional and niche markets, and is confident in its position as a top supplier of postal packaging for items such as books, music and fragile electronics.

Our judges this year were particularly impressed by news that DS Smith Speciality Packaging’s moisture-proof products are being used to transport fruit into countries as far-flung as Belize, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

They were also impressed by the company’s outspoken stance on packaging’s role in society – its entry pack included an exposé on the importance of food packaging, pointing out that, as consumers, we simply “cannot imagine a world without the safeguards packaging brings”. DS Smith Speciality Packaging’s views were felt to be exactly what the industry should be saying publicly – and much more than it is.
