Steph has been packaging sustainability director for Unilever since April 2007. He joined the company in 1992, and soon began to specialise in deodorants, first for the Europe region, and ultimately globally.

Antoinette Devine
Global packaging and materials consultant – SABMiller
Antoinette has more than 20 years’ packaging experience across various industries including cosmetics and
toiletries, spirits, pharmaceuticals and beer.

Rama Gheerawo
Innovation manager and research fellow – Helen Hamlyn Centre
Rama leads a creative team working on projects for business clients and industrial partners. Much of the work has looked at innovation in packaging from a socially centred point of view.

Des King
Freelance journalist
Des has covered the packaging and printing industries as a freelance journalist for the past 12 years, during which time his work has appeared in leading European and UK trade publications, including Packaging News.

Dr Walter Lewis
Managing director – Faraday Packaging Partnership

A latecomer to packaging after training as a biochemist, Walter is responsible for the annual administration of some £70m of research funding. Since 1997, he has been seconded to Faraday Packaging Partnership.

Nicholas Mockett
Partner – Europa Partners
Nicholas, of London-based investment bank Europa Partners, has focused on M&A in the packaging, paper and printing industries for 15 years. He has advised on E4bn worth of transactions, including the buy-out of Linpac and the disposals of Jaycare and Europackaging.

Shane Monkman

Shane has become a key player and commentator on the industry thanks to the enthusiasm and energy he has displayed in explaining Asda’s approach to packaging, and his no-nonsense approach to highlighting the flaws in the UK’s waste infrastructure.

John Monks

John has been involved with the packaging industry for more than 50 years. His career began in 1956, in production at Metal Box, subsequently spanning design, marketing and general management at a number of major international groups.

John Noble
Director – British Brands Group
John is director of the British Brands Group,
a membership organisation that provides the collective voice for brand manufacturers of all nationalities in the UK. The group was founded 12 years ago to promote the values and benefits of brands.

Barry Pamplin
European packaging technology controller – United Biscuits
Barry manages the central packaging technology team for United Biscuits. His team is responsible for all aspects of packaging technology within United Biscuits’ European manufacturing operations.

Sarah Paskell
Brand and packaging manager – Harrods
Sarah joined Harrods three years ago as brand and packaging manager. Her team is responsible for the management of all own-brand design development and packaging production for Harrods’ food and gift ranges.

Dick Searle
Chief executive – Packaging Federation
Dick has spent 40 years in the packaging industry. He has been chief executive of a number of packaging groups and his career has covered most of
the material sectors of the industry. He now runs the Packaging Federation.

Dr Tom Woollard
Principal partner – ERM
Tom is principal partner with ERM and sits on the executive committee of ERM UK. He has more than 20 years’ experience advising some of the world’s leading multinational companies on a wide range of environmental, sustainability and corporate responsibility issues.
