WINNER

DS Smith Speciality Packaging Launceston: Goodness Foods Organic Transit Box
A sweet second triumph for this pack from DS Smith Launceston, beating the group’s own Belper site and main rivals Smurfit Kappa and Inspirepac in this competitive category.

Judges were highly impressed, with two almost, but not quite, giving the entry the elusive top mark of 10 out of 10. “Fantastic solution, really innovative and works well,” said one.

The corrugated pack, which is patent-approved in the UK and Europe, is designed to deliver Goodness Foods’ fresh or frozen natural and organic produce to the trade or to the home. The base is leak-proof and uses dry ice for chilling, allowing a 72-hour delivery window.

The box is made from C-flute corrugated with a moisture-proof polyester film on the inside and a silver metallised thermal liner on the outside surface. It replaces pre-formed polystyrene, helping to reduce the amount of this type of packaging sent to landfill.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

Inspirepac: Cycle component transit/display pack
Inspirepac has provided an adaptable solution for client Hope Technology, producing a single-piece transit pack with a generic integral fitting for a variety of 48 cycle components. The pack replaced “ill-fitting” standard boxes packed with bubble wrap. The single piece of E flute board is fully recyclable and printed flexo on Chesterfield-based Inspirepac’s Bobst Masterflex. Artwork was also redesigned to communicate the quality of the product.

Smurfit Kappa XXL/Heavy Duty Peterborough: Brett Martin Rooflight
Less means more for Brett Martin following Smurfit Kappa’s redesign of the packaging for its range of polycarbonate multi-skin rooflights. The new corrugated pack has resulted in a 50% reduction in the use of strapping, a 30% cut in packing time, and eliminated the need for hot-melt gluing. Crucially, it has also reduced product damage from 5% to zero, and eliminated the need for the non-biodegradable materials, such as foam.
