DS Smith Speciality Packaging’s Launceston facility scoops an award for the third year running after being picked as the winner in this year’s Environmental Company of the Year category.

Despite picking up the environmental award in 2007 and being named 2008′s Supplier of the Year, the Cornwall corrugated site has not rested on its laurels. The firm has made a series of energy-saving decisions at the facility over the year, including process waste savings of more than £200,000 and cutting the annual use of resources such as water, gas and electricity by as much as a tenth.

As fully integrated recycling and production systems grow in importance across the packaging industry, the judges were impressed with the site’s position, through linking its customers to DS Smith’s Severnside Recycling network, as one of the first corrugated plants in the country able to offer closed-loop recycling.

Away from its work to cut the environmental footprint of its Launceston site, the DS Smith parent company made a huge £104m investment at its newly acquired mill in Kemsley, Kent to revamp a paper machine to churn out 260,000 tonnes of lightweight recycled corrugated case material every year.

While companies across the packaging industry strive to improve their carbon impact, many could do worse than take a leaf out of DS Smith’s book and the impressive continued progress made at its Launceston site.
