The Silver Crane Company: Marks & Spencer Retro Green Car Tin
The Silver Crane Company stood head and shoulders above the rest of the metal packaging category for its “fantastic, reusable, eye-catching” car-shaped tins for Marks & Spencer. But there could only be one winner and the green car just pipped its red counterpart to the chequered flag.

While retro products are always popular, the tin nevertheless stands out from the crowd with a look that is still fresh and understated. The tins are illustrated by hand and have a detailed yet restrained design that appeals to the young and young at heart. “The cars have excellent shelf appeal and great potential for reuse,” said one judge.

It’s not just a looker, though. The judges were also impressed by the technical expertise used to create a complex shape without a discernable distortion of the tinplate. Deep embossing is applied to the oval shape and a plug lid facilitates a flush join between lid and body. Separate wheel components are cleverly affixed to the tin body through angled rivets.

All the attributes come together to create a good-looking pack that, while being retro, will not go out of fashion. As one judge said: “It’s a well-targeted and imaginative use of metal packaging. It ticks all of the right boxes and the cars will still be on display in 100 years’ time.”
