WINNER

Brand Opus: Pipers Crisp Co

With a 31.7% increase in customers in the year under review, a 46% immediate increase in turnover, and ten new jobs created, these results from Brand Opus’ redesign of Pipers Crisps confirmed its place for the top award, according to the judges. The brief was clear, after nearly eight years of sustained growth, Pipers Crisps wanted to refresh its brand and packaging to reflect their core values. Central to the new branding was a new name on the pack – Pipers Crisp Co – highlighting the product and the company behind the brand. The updated logo also incorporated the message ‘Made by Farmers’.  The Piper was established as the quirky masthead and represents the brands rural heritage. Describing the new stand-out-colour palette, one judge said: “This new look is great. You could almost taste the handmade crisps just by looking at the pack. The pack revamp has maintained brand values and ethics with that home-grown and cared for feeling.”  Another commented: “This will reposition the brand for the better and has already given it a brand renewed confidence.”

HIGHLY COMMENDED

Design Futures, Sheffield Hallam University: Tea Experience

Family-run business Tea Experience turned to Design Futures to create new packaging for its ‘flowering tea blooms’ range of products. One judged loved the redesign so much and said: “I am definitely going to buy one.”  The pack revamp required an economical and supply chain friendly solution to package the firm’s highly breakable products. Before Design Futures intervention, the various products were sold either in the packaging as shipped from China, or repacked in elaborate and expensive gift boxes. One judge declared: “Feels like its hand packed and very easy to recycle.”
