Ball Packaging Europe is using thermochromic ink on a new Coors Light can for the UK market that shows consumers when the drink is cooled to the right temperature.

Molson Coors uses the thermochromic inks for a number of brands, such as Carling and Caffreys, as part of its marketing strategy in both North America and Europe.

However, the new Coors Light cans represent the first time the firm has used thermochromic inks to cover such a large surface area. The can that will appear on the UK market is printed so that the entire Rocky Mountains image turns from white to blue.

Senior marketing manager Steve Mitchell said Molson Coors and Ball had worked closely together to develop a system to cover such a large area of the can in thermochromic ink.

“Our aim was to promote the ice-cold refreshment positioning of our cans with retailers, shoppers and consumers,” he said.

The new 300ml and 500ml cans hit shelves this month and are manufactured at Ball’s Wrexham facility.

John Reed, manager for commercial product at Ball, said: “Consumers are able to see at a glance whether the beer is at optimal drinking temperature or whether it needs to be cooled longer. This helps make the can even more consumer friendly.”
