Co-op recalls own-label wines over broken glass in bottles

The Co-operative supermarket chain has issued a product recall after discovering that some of its 75cl bottles of wine contained small pieces of glass.

A spokesperson for The Co-operative Group told Packaging News: “The cause of the problem has been traced to a fault with the capping process, which has now been rectified.

“The Co-operative received full co-operation from the packer, and is pleased with the response that they have provided.”

The products involved are all Californian wines, although the name of the packer has not been revealed.

The recall follows a similar case last month, when Nestlé had to recall 100g jars of its Nescafé Collections range because of the risk that they could contain glass.

The Co-Operative own-label wines affected are Californian The Fab Cab Ruby Cabernet Shiraz, Californian The Big Chill Colombard Chardonnay, Silver Creek Sauvignon Blanc and The Pink Chill California Zinfandel Rosé.

The Food Standards Agency yesterday (June 9) issued a Product Recall Information Notice, which said that four types of wine are being recalled, and has included the lot codes of those bottles potentially contaminated.

The supermarket has erected point-of-sale product recall notices in its stores, explaining why the products have been recalled and telling customers how they can get a full refund.

Co-operative issued the following statement to consumers: “It has come of our attention that a very small number of bottles of the above wines may contain small pieces of glass.
