Two of Coca-Cola’s largest bottling plants could be affected by strike action over a pay dispute.

Trade union Unite is preparing to ballot workers at the drinks' giant's Milton Keynes plant, while workers at Wakefield are scheduled to vote this Friday (22 June).

The union said Coca-Cola's proposed wage increase of 2.5% was a "kick in the teeth", since it falls below the rate of inflation.

Unite regional officer Kelvin Mawer said: "How can Coca-Cola expect employees to accept a pay offer far below the retail price index (RPI), when the same employees have contributed to the success of the business?"

The Wakefield plant can distribute up to 200 million cans and bottles a week with its 517 staff.

Coca-Cola Enterprises declined to comment on the specific details of the strike, but said it remained committed to "constructive dialogue" with employees and representatives.

A spokesperson said: "Decisions on employees' pay reflect our responsibility to protect the future vitality of the business."
