Coca-Cola staff at this year’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver will be wearing a uniform made from recycled plastic bottles.

Coca-Cola is using uniforms made from 120 used plastic bottles to make its sponsorship of the Games, which start today, carbon neutral and zero waste.

The firm will also be collecting all of the PET bottles that are used at the Games via more that 800 barrels across the venues. The barrels were previously used to carry the concentrate for its drinks.

The brand has sponsored the Olympics since 1928 and is looking to take the zero-waste approach forward to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Coca-Cola GB president Sanjay Guha said: “Being a sustainable business is the right thing for our customers, business and the environment. We are committed to be a leader and the prize is inspiring communities to take action on the environment.”

One of the company’s sustainability activities is the rolling out of Recycle Zones. It already has 38 and has a target for 80 to be in operation by next year. More than 50 tonnes of recyclable packaging has been collected since the first zone was opened in 2008.

Packaging News revealed yesterday that the drinks giant had launched a range of special edition cans in the US to commemorate the Vancouver Games.
