Factory Design creates three-in-one stopper for Le Creuset

Factory Design has developed a new wine bottle stopper for Screwpull that also acts as a pourer and aerator.

Le Creuset-owned Screwpull approached Factory Design three years’ ago on the back of two previous projects with an idea to combine the three functions in a single item.

Factory Design director Adam White told Packaging News: “There wasn’t any product like it on the market and they came and asked if we could do it.”

White stressed the importance of meeting Le Creuset’s high manufacturing standards, and the need to fulfil three different roles as factors behind the three-year development time.

“Bringing together the three materials – soft rubber, rigid plastic and stainless steel – to perfect three different tasks took a lot of persistence on both design engineering and manufacturing to make it work,” he said.

If a bottle of wine is not consumed in one sitting, the stopper can be used to store the bottle on its side.

Twisting it 90 degrees enables it to be poured out through a stainless steel pipe, which also aerates the wine before reaching the glass.

A first shipment is said to be on its way from the Chinese manufacturers and will be available in specialist wine retailers and potentially department stores.
