Showgoers get first glimpse of EUR 1m metal fizz closure

The closure, which is so far available only on certain champagnes from producer Duval-Leroy, had its first public outing in May at the London International Wine Fair (LIWF).

A spokeswoman for Alcan Capsules told Packaging News the closure, which has been designed to retain the ‘pop’ sound of the traditional cork, had caught the eye of fizzy wine producers.

“A number of sparkling wine producers are ready to place orders, but we are currently pursuing the industrialisation of Maestro with clients in the Champagne region, where our Mareuil production site is based,” she said.

Alcan Capsules is part of Alcan Packaging, the $6bn-turnover business that is in the process of being sold by owner Rio Tinto Alcan, and has spent three years and EUR 1m developing the closure.

The launch came in the same month American packaging giant Bemis admitted it was in talks to buy part of the Alcan Packaging business. Chief financial officer Gene Wulf said “confidential efforts are ongoing” over a potential deal. Amcor is also bidding for part of the business.
