Smurfit Kappa moves into pouches with French wine launch

Jeanjean brought the packaging firms on board to create the pouches for its Bivouac and Les Embruns wines, which will be sold exclusively in the format to save on materials and reduce weight for transportation.

The 1.5-litre Pouch-Up packaging weighs 35g and cuts carbon emissions by 80% compared to the equivalent two 75cl glass bottles for wine. It can preserve wine for up to six weeks after opening and features a compact Vitop tamper-evident tap to dispense the wine.

The pack’s construction, with a single gusset at the bottom, allows it to stand up, while the film used has been chosen to be compatible with high-resolution printing.

“For Smurfit Kappa the Pouch-Up is a new development we made to appeal to a young, sportive and active market segment,” said a company spokeswoman.

“We think it is a complementary packaging to bag-in-box. Currently available in 1.5-litre for the wine, it will be enlarged to other product applications.”

The Jeanjean group also has a range of wines sold in bag-in-box and bottle formats.
