Tesco trials Dairy Crest milk in bagsJosh Brooks, 20 July 2010Tesco is trialling milk in plastic bags as producer Dairy Crest highlighted strong sales growth in the format.
The firm said that, in particular, sales of milk in bags with the Jugit container were growing strongly. “In addition to national distribution to Sainsbury’s we have started a trial with Tesco and are also increasing sales to our doorstep customers,” Dairy Crest said in the statement. Tesco told Packaging News that the trials were for Dairy Crest branded milk, rather than its own products. “We are currently trialling the Dairy Crest Country Life milk bags in a small number of our stores,” a spokeswoman said. Bagged milk has proven to be successful at Sainsbury’s but Waitrose decided to withdraw the format saying it was not popular with customers and led to increased product waste. Dairy Crest chief executive Mark Allen said the firm’s performance in the first part of the year was in line with objectives. “Dairy Crest continues to benefit from being a broadly based business,” he said. The Jugit container is produced by plastic packaging manufacturer RPC. Click here for today’s headlines from across the packaging industry CommentsSpeak Your Mind |

In an interim management statement, Dairy Crest said it had invested in improving efficiencies at its dairies and was “making good progress” in liquid milk sales.

FAIL!
I have got ongoing complaints with Tesco and Dairy Crest regarding these milk bags.
What I thought was a brilliant idea has a FATAL flaw which both Tesco and Dairy Crest are investigating.
Despite cleaning the jug thoroughly after every use, there is NOTHING to prevent bacteria on the OUTSIDE of the bag from being literally INJECTED into the milk and spoiling it.
One minute milk, a few hours later cheese!
And where did this bacteria come from? Well the bags are stored and handled by various means from dairy to fridge, so go figure!
Yes another great Eco/Green/Expensive idea fatally flawed?!
I’m going back to regular plastic bottles which are more healthy, less wasteful and less expensive.
Well, here’s a novel idea. Wash the bag before you use it you lazy person lol.
I bought one of these jugs last week and after only two tries I have found the seal between the plastic bag and the large needle does not work.
When the bag is approx. half empty the milk started to run down the inside and outside of the jug when being used. I have returned it back to Sainsbury’s where it came.
