Twinings has installed a new automated system from Sewtec Automation to enhance the packing of its flow wrapped tea bags.

The Sewtec LX5249-2 robotic machines will pack boxes of 40, 80, 160 and 240 tea bags. The bespoke top load system has gone into Twinings’ Andover factory.

According to Twinings planning engineer Ken Crowther, the company opted for Sewtec because of its reputation to build “well engineered and reliable machines”.

“The lines were phased into production one at a time, and Sewtec remained on site until all lines were running to specification, thus ensuring that the project was completed in full and on time,” he added.

Twinings’ machine incorporates a buffer storage system and can store up to 10 minutes of production. If there are any stoppages on the line then the machines can divert the product away from the robotic top loader into an integrated store.

Four IMA tea-bag machines linked to four PFM flow wrappers transfer pillow packs into the Sewtec designed conveyor and gating system, which channels the packs to the three robotic box loaders.

According to Sewtec, the pick and place robot features twin axis servo motion control “for consistent and reliable operation”.
