Food packaging firm Interflex has upgraded its bread bag making line following a 600,000 investment.

The Sunderland-based business was given financial assistance with a £90,000 grant from development agency One North East.

Interflex managing director Graham Tilley said that the equipment would improve the firm’s capacity and range of products at the site and also safeguards 20 jobs. The site has a workforce of 110.

“The team at Interflex has worked really hard to deliver the efficiency improvements that were needed,” said Tilley.

“This investment demonstrates Interflex’s continued commitment to the business and enables us to continue with the development of the site and undertake further expansion.”

One North East director of business and industry Ian Williams added: “There is a growing market for flexible printed packaging for the food industry due to demands to have lighter packaging for their products.”

Interflex was founded in 1978 and had two manufacturing facilities until the two were consolidated in 1998 to the company’s current premises on Sunderland Enterprise Park.
