Kellogg’s has revealed elevated levels of a packaging chemical were the reason for the recall of 28 million of its cereal boxes last month.

The cereal giant recalled four products in the US after the packaging lining was said to smell abnormal and has been linked to diarrhoea.

According to US media reports, Kellogg’s research found that methylnaphthalene present in the liner was the cause of the smell.

Kellogg’s told Food Safety News: “Working with external experts in medicine, toxicology, public health, chemistry and food safety, we identified elevated levels of hydrocarbons, including methylnaphthalene.”

The wax is commonly used as a protective coating for foods such as cheese and vegetables.

Kellogg’s said that the elevated levels were not harmful and it that was working to ensure the situation was not repeated.
