Wyeth invests in Tekpak flow wrapper to pack baby milk

Ireland-based packaging machinery manufacturer Tekpak has sold a fully servo-controlled flow wrapper to Pfizer-owned pharmaceutical company Wyeth to pack powdered baby milk.

The machine, which has just been installed, uses Tekpak’s newly-developed four-axis robotic feeding unit.

The firm said that the concept of robotically lifting nutrition scoops directly from an injection mould and feeding them into a flow wrapper, without the need for human intervention, is a first for the market.

Wyeth’s infant milk packaging includes scoops for parents to measure the powder. Tekpak’s system robotically transfers the scoops from the injection moulding machine to the flow wrapper to ensure maximum hygiene.

The system is controlled by an integrated logic and motion controller, which controls the operation of the eight servo motors (four in the robot feeding system and four in the flow wrapper).

The flow wrapper and the handling robot were designed and manufactured at Tekpak’s Wexford factory.

John Kehoe, Tekpak’s managing director, said: “The robotic feeding unit has been developed as a standard module which can be easily and quickly adapted for use in feeding a wide variety of products to either our own flow wrappers or to customers’ existing machines.”

The company said that the machine is suitable for packaging applications for including bakery, confectionery, cake and biscuit products.
