Packaging has been placed at the heart of a 20m expansion programme at pharmaceutical firm Teva UK that will create 50 new jobs.

The new positions are to be created at the Leeds-based group’s site in Eastbourne, which has been a centre of excellence for to company’s packaging operation since 1998.

According to local newspaper reports, the new positions will include packaging engineers and supervisors, technicians and quality control analysts who test batches of medicines to be packaged to make sure they meet strict safety criteria.

The investment will, the reports said, increase capacity at the site from packaging 4.2 billion tablets a year to eight billion by 2012.

No-one from the company was available for comment this morning (17 November), but operations and supply chain director Karl Belk told the Eastbourne Herald that the company wanted to be “a good neighbour” in the town.

Teva supplies medicines to pharmacies and hospitals, including painkillers, antibiotics, cholesterol reducers and injectable medicines to fight cancer. It specialises in generic and respiratory medicines such as inhalers to relieve the symptoms of asthma.
