Abbey targets plastic markets with ‘mouldable’ corrugated board

Abbey Board, part of DS Smith Packaging, is taking on the plastic packaging sector with its new mouldable corrugated material.

AbbeyFibreForm is based on fibre that can be shaped to the item it carries and embossed, which the firm said made it an alternative for plastics or expanded polystyrene for applications such as point of sale and blister packs.

Barriers can be added to make it suitable for food packaging applications and it can be directly litho-printed for branding.

Abbey speciality sales manager Tony Stone said AbbeyFibreForm would help enhance the appearance of products.

“Importantly, it’s easy to recycle using normal collection routes and can be supplied with FSC certification if requested,” he said.

Abbey also said that switching to the board would not require any investment in new equipment to convert it and that it could also help eliminate the need for secondary packaging in some applications.
