BASF increases European price of Styrolux

BASF is to raise the price in Europe of its Styrolux (SBC polymer) by EUR150 (120) per metric ton.

The chemical giant said this measure was in addition to the increase announced in June, and was being implemented because the cost of raw materials, energy and transportation had risen further.

The Styrolux plastic material is mainly used for transparent food packaging, blister packaging and injection-moulded products in cosmetics, household and office equipment.

BASF has also announced that in the fourth quarter of 2008 it will start building a second oxidising plant for the production of synthetic waxes at its Ludwigshafen site in Germany, which will double its production capacity.

At the same time the company will modernise the existing plant in an investment of around €10m (£7.9m).

The waxes are used primarily in plastics processing.

From 2010 the plant will produce several thousand metric tons of oxidised waxes using a process developed by the company.

The raw material − low-density polyethylene waxes (PE waxes) − will come from the site’s own polymerisation plants.
