BASF has opened two manufacturing plants at its Freeport, Texas site to “further strengthen” its US manufacturing base.

Installations will include a new production line for polyamide 6 (nylon) and a plant for the production of superabsorbent polymers (SAP).

Polyamide 6 is used for food and flexible packaging films, while SAP are utilised for gels in meat packaging to absorb liquids and keep food fresh.

The polyamide production line, which has an annual capacity of 120,000 metric tonnes per year, replaces a facility in Enka, North Carolina.

Meanwhile, the SAP manufacturing facility, which has a capacity of 180,000 metric tonnes per year, replaces existing facilities in Aberdeen, Mississippi and Portsmouth, Virginia.

Another BASF plant at the Freeport site will supply the SAP facility with acrylic acid, which is a key ingredient.

Dr Harald Lauke, president of BASF's performance polymers division, said Freeport is now the "manufacturing base for BASF's entire polyamide intermediaries and polymers business" in North America.

"We are strongly committed to the North American polyamide market, and the state-of-the-art technology employed at the new facility will enable us to reliably support our customers with top-quality polymers," he said.
