BASF to reduce European production of polystyrene

BASF, which supplies materials and chemicals to the packaging industry, is to cut production of polystyrene plastics in Europe by 25% as it battles the economic downturn.

The company said the cutbacks would affect its sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium from 1 October.

BASF said the reduced production would not affect staff numbers at either plant.

Jaroslaw Michniuk, who heads BASF’s European Styrenics business, said: “The market for polystyrene has shrunk in almost all customer sectors this year.”

BASF has been trying to sell several standard-plastics businesses, including polystyrene, for more than a year and chief executive Juergen Hambrecht recently said he had been dissatisfied with the prices offered by suitors.
