British Glass calls for linked materials and council recycling targets

British Glass has said more successful recycling requires a closer correlation between local authority and packaging materials targets, and linking waste with carbon emissions.

David Workman, director general of British Glass, welcomed the updated business recycling and recovery targets for packaging, published by the government earlier this month, but expressed concerns over having the right "finance and infrastructure" in place to accommodate "much higher rates".

The new recycling target for glass is 78% in 2008, rising to 81% in 2010.

Workman said there would be "no CO2 savings" if materials were collected and mixed together, and the only option was to put them into roads.

"We've got to look at what is meant by recycling and need to focus on local authorities segregating the waste they collect rather than co-mingling," he said.

Workman said there was "no reason" why the sector would not meet the targets but said the current infrastructure meant that "real" closed-loop recycling "may well go in the opposite direction".
