Bubble Wrap goes golden to mark 50th birthday: video

Some people pop it to relieve stress, some roll on it, and some even use it to pack fragile goods – but whatever its many uses, Bubble Wrap celebrated its 50th birthday yesterday.

The iconic cushioning material, which now belongs to global packaging manufacturer Sealed Air, was first invented in New Jersey in 1957 in an experiment designed to result in a textured plastic wallpaper.

But Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding, the pair who came up with the concept, soon realised that the wallpaper application had no future and, after flirting with the greenhouse insulation market, realised that the product would find buyers as a packaging material.

To celebrate yesterday’s golden anniversary, Sealed Air’s factory in Saddle River, New Jersey, produced a special run of gold Bubble Wrap.

Sealed Air president and chief executive William Hickey said the company was “honoured” to manufacture a product that “not only serves to cushion fragile materials, but also… helps to de-stress and bring smiles to faces”.

In addition, Sealed Air was yesterday celebrating the 10th annual Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day.
