Chinese film importer takes on UK market

A new importer of Chinese flexible films is targeting the speciality sector after launching in the UK market.

Alliance Packaging launched in Australia at the beginning of the year and is already supplying orders. It has been operating in the UK for some six weeks, but is already seeing enquiries for its products.

Tarquin Crouch, technical director and sales manager for Europe and Africa, told Packaging News Alliance’s global structure enabled the firm to get around the issues that had limited Chinese firms’ expansion in Europe.

“Having a presence here, we’ve negated the time zone difference, and unlike many Chinese firms are offering credit,” he said. “We’ve also got around the language barrier by having local representation in China.”

Crouch set up the firm with former ExxonMobil colleague Patrick Brincat, who heads the Australian operation, and Hong Kong-based Richard Li who liaises with the Chinese firms.

The firm can supply a wide range of flexible films including polypropylene, polyester, aluminium foils and unprinted laminates and Crouch said the firms saw opportunities in the speciality packaging markets.

He said the firm anticipated making significant inroads into the coated films market, particularly for biscuit packaging. “We are offering a one-side coated PVDA film that can be printed for a range of applications,” said Crouch.
