Clifton Packaging storms into barrier film market

Clifton Packaging is taking on the barrier film market’s multinational giants after winning an “exceptional” quantity of work with its own barrier film, Packaging News can reveal.

The family-owned Leicester company, whose core business is in pouches and bags, began working on a move into the barrier films market a year ago after it hired Shane D’Souza, an expert in the material, as new business and technical development manager.

D’Souza and two other barrier film developers have since developed a new product and secured deals with a number of clients in the food industry, especially in the wet protein and ambient food sectors.

Khalid Sheikh, Clifton Packaging chairman, said the weakness of sterling made now the ideal time for his company to be launching the material.

“As a UK manufacturer we are competing against Indian businesses and we’ve taken a lot of business from them.

“With the weak pound there can’t be a better time for UK entrepreneurs to stand their ground. That buyers are looking abroad beggars belief.”

He declined to reveal how much work had been won, but said that the product, which is produced on-site at the Leicester facility, was doing “exceptionally well”.
