Corus jobs on the line as steel capacity cut at Trostre site

Corus is to cut nearly 100 jobs at its Packaging Plus factory in south Wales due to “very difficult market conditions”.

The steel manufacturer has announced a reduction in capacity of 120,000 tonnes at the Trostre works in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and made 94 redundancies.

The plant produces steel used in food and drinks cans.

Corus said it had to reduce costs and improve operational flexibility to ensure the long-term security of packaging steel manufacturing at Trostre.

A spokeswoman said overcapacity in Europe, together with increased raw material and energy prices, had caused the problems.

The capacity reduction would not affect the firm's commitment to its customers, she added.

Full consultation with employees and trade union representatives has begun.
