Innovia’s NatureFlex certified as carbon neutralstevenkiernan, 28 January 2008Be the first to comment on this article Innovia Films has achieved carbon zero status for its NatureFlex coated biodegradable and compostable packaging films through the implementation of carbon reduction schemes.
The firm was then able to determine the carbon footprint of NatureFlex in 2008, at least up until it leaves the factory. NatureFlex films are typically around 95% renewable as measured by ASTM D6866, the firm said. The product has already reached the standard required for soil, home composting and waste water at ambient temperatures, as well as for industrial composting. Innovia Films chief executive David Beeby said: "Our involvement in these initiatives allows us to offset the overall effect of NatureFlex production and reassure our customers that it is actually CarbonZero at the point of dispatch from Innovia's premises." In addition, the firm has planted 3,000 trees at Sand Martin Wood in Cumbria with carbon services company Co2Balance and will contribute to a scheme that distributes solar ovens to poor communities in Africa, thereby helping to reduce deforestation, co2 emissions and costs. NatureFlex films comprise a transparent cellulose base made from sustainable wood pulp with specially formulated biodegradable and compostable layers to control moisture permeability, which allows them to be used for wrapping fresh produce, particularly organic ranges, confectionery twist wrap and personal care products.
