Jobs under threat at Saica’s Peterlee plant

Saica Pack has announced plans to restructure its Peterlee operations with the loss of up to 30 manufacturing and administration roles.

The company has entered into a month-long consultation with staff. If no viable alternative can be found, the redundancies will be completed in February 2010.

Saica’s Peterlee business has, the company said, been “sustaining important losses for several years”, which have been exacerbated by the recession.

“We know, that for some time, there has been much local speculation regarding the future of the two Peterlee plants and that much of this foresaw its complete closure,” said Saica Pack in the North managing director Andrew Chamberlain.

“Thankfully such an outcome has been avoided, but we are very aware of and sensitive to the fact that this will still be disappointing news for many of our staff. However, by taking these actions now we believe we can maintain viable production into the future.”

Saica Pack is part of the Spanish Saica Group, which employs over 2000 people in 19 sites across the UK and has a turnover of EUR430m.
