Jordans chooses NatureFlex and Mater-Bi for cereal relaunch

Jordans Cereals is repackaging its entire range of organic cereals in biodegradable plastic bags this September to coincide with Organic Fortnight.

The bags comprise one layer of Innovia Films' NatureFlex product and one of Mater-Bi GM-free cornstarch-based plastic, which are layered together.

It has taken the company three years to develop the bags, which take six to 12 weeks to decompose.

Jordans is completing further tests to discover whether barley and cress will grow in the decomposed bags. It hopes to be able to class the packs as fully biodegradable once these tests are completed.

The company has also redesigned its boxed products, which are manufactured from 80% recycled board.

Jordans is investigating the possibility of extending the biodegradable packaging to its other product ranges.

The new organic range will be available in leading supermarkets from September.

Organic Fortnight runs from 1-16 September and is organised by the Soil Association.
