M-real is to increase the price of its white-top kraftliner grades by 50 a tonne from next month to offset raw material price rises.

The Finnish firm said the price of M-real Kemiart coated and uncoated white-top kraftliner papers would rise by £50 a tonne in the UK and EUR 50 per tonne in continental Europe from 15 March.

“The price increase is necessary due to steadily rising raw material costs and also reflects good market demand,” M-real said in a statement today.

Risto Auero, vice president for linerboard and speciality paper sales, said: “Our order books have been full since last September and good demand is set to continue.”

“The reason for the difference in prices is that UK prices are currently more depressed and we are trying to take that into account.”

The announcement comes a week after M-real revealed its pre-tax loss for 2009 had tripled to EUR 150m as sales fell by a quarter.

Nonetheless, the firm is confident going forward after moving into profit in the fourth quarter for the first time in 2009.

Chief executive Mikko Helander said: “The gradual recovery of the market situation supports the continuation of our positive profit development.”
