New British Plastics Federation president Paul Jukes has called for a level playing field between packaging materials and firms operating in different countries.

In a statement, Arkema managing director Jukes laid down his aims for his two-year presidency that he hopes will “make the road out of recession even for all our companies”.

On 7 July, Plastics Europe, the Packaging and Films Association and the BPF will launch a new programme, the Plastics 2020 Challenge – Reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. The scheme is designed to promote the role of plastics and improve its public image.

Jukes said it was important firms continued to invest in training staff, promote innovative products and explore the potential opportunities for export presented by the current value of sterling.

He reiterated the concern that UK energy prices exceeded those in mainland Europe, and said he would work for a more fair treatment by the media and politicians, particularly with regards to the Climate Change Levy energy tax.

“Sometime there will be an upturn and we have to try and ensure the plastics industry is well placed to take advantage of it,” said Jukes.
