New pack technology examined by report

New packaging technology throws up a minefield of safety challenges for industry, according to a report by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies and the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

Scientists looked at engineered nanoscale materials (ENM), those between one and 100 billionth of a metre, used in food packaging.

The US researchers said food-packaging, food companies and consumers shared an interest in identifying and answering “possible safety questions” before marketing materials containing ENMs.

“New nanotechnology consumer products are coming on the market at the rate of three to four per week,” said the report, which estimated more than 600 existed in total.

The regulatory system was not widely understood and questions arose on how it applied to nanoscale substances used in food packaging, said author Michael Taylor.

The research professor at George Washington University added that companies developing ENMs for use in packaging needed to answer questions on potential risks.

His report, Assuring the Safety of Nanomaterials in Food Packaging, was prompted by concern from government, industry and the public on rules around nanotech.
