Packaging tooling firm R&D Integrated Solutions in Plastics has opened a ‘product solutions lab’ at its Sutton-in-Ashfield location in Nottinghamshire.

According to R&D managing director Alan Tolley, the new lab will offer a “full service from concept to tooling and manufacturing”.

Services will include full mould manufacturing for PET tooling, IBM tooling, injection moulds and a full range of support functions, including sampling analysis, mould maintenance and contract moulding.

R&D has invested £350,000 in a Nissei ASB 70 DPH single-stage tooling machine for the Product Solutions Lab, which Tolley said would enable the firm to offer customers pilot tooling of complex shapes and run off samples for line trials, provide the opportunity to test production tooling, and offer in-house training to both its own staff and customers.

“We’re now a more rounded company,” he said. “Our people, our technology and our engineering ability open new opportunities for our customers in the UK, continental Europe and beyond.”

R&D provides single-stage tooling for “anything not round” for the food, beverage, home, personal care and healthcare industries.

It employs 65 people in Nottinghamshire and grew sales by 22% in 2008. Around 85% of its tooling is exported.

R&D customers include Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Graham Packaging and RPC.
