SAICA, the Spanish firm which last month bought 19 of SCA’s UK businesses, has lodged a planning application for its planned 250m recycled paper mill near Manchester.

The proposed site is on Partington Wharfside, a regeneration zone which is bounded on its north-west side by the Manchester Ship Canal. A decision is expected at the start of October and building could begin before the end of the year.

No one from SAICA was available for comment. However, a spokesman told a local business magazine that the investment was “a sign of confidence in the ongoing regeneration of the area”.

It is also understood the firm has launched its search for staff through local recruitment agency Morgan Ryder.

The application, lodged at the start of last month with Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, is the latest stage in SAICA’s establishment as a major player in the UK corrugated sector, after it paid £100m for 19 of SCA’s UK businesses in June.

SCA has proposed the closure of its containerboard mill in New Hythe, Kent. The adjoining boxmaking plant is not affected, as may have been understood from our article last month.
