Sainsbury’s claims success with greener Easter packs

Sainsbury’s has achieved its goal of using 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging for its 2008 boxed Easter eggs.

Last year, the multiple trialled the world's first compostable Easter egg packaging for its SO Organic Easter egg.

However, this year it has removed all plastic and foil wrapped the egg, which is placed in a cartonboard box with no film in the window and no clamshell.

Sainsbury's print and packaging manager Stuart Lendrum said the Plantic Technologies clamshell used last year was "difficult to thermoform and maintain the clarity, as thermoforming causes the material to have a frosted effect".

However, he said the business was working with Plantic on other projects.
