Smurfit Kappa CEO urges better promotion of corrugated

Smurfit Kappa UK chief executive Clive Bowers has issued a clarion call to the corrugated sector to do more to promote itself ahead of a meeting with members of parliament this week.

The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) has written to MPs with corrugated plants in their constituencies and invited them to the event on Wednesday (4 November), alongside prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) standing in their constituencies.

Over 30 MPs have already confirmed their attendance as well as five PPCs.

“It’s an exciting time for the corrugated industry,” said Bowers. “We need now to take this opportunity to work with all relevant bodies, such as government, retailers and our customers, to prove that corrugated is the most flexible, best packaging medium to promote and protect the product.”

Bowers told Packaging News that the industry has to start promoting itself to the younger generation, legislators and government bodies as well as promoting training.

“We need to invest in our people and make our industry far more attractive for the next generation of school leavers,” said Bowers.

“I passionately believe that our industry can offer so much to so many people in terms of industry challenges, career opportunities, economic prosperity along with supporting our precious environment.”

The meeting follows shortly after the ‘Making Waves with Corrugated’ conference held in Stratford-upon-Avon last month by the CPI and the Sheet Plant Association.

At the event, Tesco’s packaging development manager Stephen Pizer spoke of the “renaissance in corrugated” in the retail sector.
