FSA backs portion control
Food manufacturers should make more food available in smaller portion sizes, according to Food Standards Agency proposals on healthy eating.
In a consultation launched yesterday, it said smaller portions were often only available as part of multi-packs and also cost more.
The consultation comes after Dr Paul Butler, an advisor to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), said portioning by packaging was not used enough in the UK.
Speaking at last week’s Pro2Pac exhibition, he said the US had been quicker to adopt portioning to combat the country’s obesity problem.
Portioning would also help reduce food waste, he said. A WRAP report this month found that the UK throws away 6.7m tonnes of food each year.
