WRAP highlights eco advantages of low-weight bottles

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has claimed that bulk importing of wine combined with lightweight bottles can offer major environmental benefits.

A 300g glass bottle filled with 75cl of bulk-imported wine can mean a 375g reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, according to WRAP’s “Bottling wine in a changing climate” report.

The study compared the footprint of wines imported from Australia and France, highlighting key areas where different savings can be made depending on the use of bulk containers, glass lightweighting and a variety of transport methods.

WRAP glass technology manager Andy Dawe said the report was important because, by establishing benchmark figures, it allowed importers to make “informed decisions” about cutting their emissions.

The report is due to be published at the London International Wine and Spirits Fair, which takes place at London’s ExCel from 22-24 May.
