Unite shakes hands with Scottish print body over wage hike

Unite has struck a deal with the Scottish Print Employers Federation (SPEF) to implement a 2007/08 national wage increase for print industry employees.

The agreement for an £8.59 weekly wage hike was reached following day-long negotiations on Monday, 14 May. It would represent a 3.3% rise on the current £260.34 per week minimum wage.

Unite national officer Steve Sibbald said ballots are now being drawn up for distribution to more than 2,000 union members affected by the agreement.

He added that the proposed settlement was the best that could be achieved by both parties and would likely be accepted by Unite members. Sibbald told printweek.com that he was “reasonably confident, bearing in mind it was a struggle and I think members recognise that. Members know that some of the companies they’re working for are also struggling.”

According to SPEF, the two bodies welcomed the result. SPEF director Simon Fairclough said: “I am pleased to report that a spirit of realism appeared to be shared by both parties. Our very serious concerns relating to the affordability of a settlement were understood.

A result is expected in mid- to late June once members have had the chance to consider the offer.
