Britvic is latest to sign Courtauld packaging reduction pledge

Soft drinks maker Britvic has signed the Courtauld Commitment with the Waste & Resource Action Programme to reduce the amount of packaging material waste.

Britvic is understood to be the first soft drinks company to sign the agreement, which means that WRAP will support Britvic's research into reducing packaging and increasing the amount of recycled material used.

In turn, Britvic will help WRAP to design out packaging waste growth by 2008, deliver absolute reductions in packaging waste by 2010 and identify ways to tackle the problem of food waste.

Britvic's packaging is already recyclable and the amount of raw materials to make glass bottles, PET plastic and cans has been reduced in recent years. Britvic says it has saved 11,000 tonnes of packaging from going into landfill.

Britvic plans more innovation in this important area, with the potential also for some joint environmental work with grocery customers.

Britvic chief executive Paul Moody said: "WRAP's objectives clearly align with Britvic's packaging innovation strategy. Consumers are looking for more and more ways to reduce waste to landfill and this is an important issue for us as manufacturers - allowing us to make a difference."
