BPI's green garden sacks to land on Somerfield shelves

A new range of 100% biodegradable and compostable garden sacks from British Polythene Industries (BPI) is to hit Somerfield shelves in the next few days.

The Starchies range of garden compost bags, which won EN13432 accreditation last month, is made from 100% Novamont Mater-Bi biopolymer, which is derived from non-GM corn starch.

The 60-litre sacks are designed primarily for the disposal of domestic kitchen and garden waste.

BPI already uses the Novamont Mater-Bi biopolymer in bags for packaging fruit and vegetables.

Andrew Green, managing director of BPI Recycled Products, said the firm planned to extend the range for industrial applications, for example for use by local authorities.

He pointed out, however, that even with EN13432 accreditation, it could still be difficult to convince local authorities that the products were genuinely fully compostable and biodegradable.
